20th CYPRUS FILM DAYS International Festival 2022 – April 8 – 16 – Rialto Theatre, Limassol – Zena Palace, Nicosia

Film lovers from all over Cyprus are invited to attend the island’s biggest film event, which will take place from April 8 to 16, 2022. This 20th edition of the Cyprus Film Days international festival will be held in the physical presence of the public at the Rialto Theater in Limassol and Zena Palace in Nicosia.

Co-organized by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth and the Rialto Theater, the Festival promises to present some of the best independent film productions from the previous and current year, honoring the work of recognized and talented filmmakers.

The annual spring get-together will provide viewers with another eclectic experience featuring hours of film screenings and social interaction, while highlighting Cyprus’s importance as a meeting point for filmmakers, filmmaking trends and the cinematic aesthetic.

Showcasing some of the most compelling cinematic productions of our time, this year’s compilation of screenings includes over twenty feature-length fiction films: world-renowned productions (Viewfinder), an inclusive international competition section (Glocal Images), the very awaited Cypriot Films Competition Section comprising four productions by local filmmakers, as well as a series of parallel programs and the new edition of the Cypriot Film Days for Children and Young People.

Among other films, festival highlights include Kenneth Branagh’s autobiographical and most talked about Belfast, Compartment No. 6 by Juho Kuosmanen, which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as The Worst Person in the World. directed by Joachim Trier.

The selection of films and the programming of screenings and side events are ensured by a three-member artistic committee composed of Tonia Mishiali (director/producer), Dr. Costas Constandinides (filmmaker) and Marios Stylianou (director/producer).

Despite the challenges imposed by the pandemic and in full respect of all applicable measures, the Festival is preparing to welcome its loyal audience to its natural homeland: where the heart of Cinema beats.

The rewards

Five eminent personalities from the international independent film community this year make up the International Jury, responsible for rewarding the films that take part in the official sections of the competition. Specifically, during the awards ceremony, which will take place on April 16, 2022 at the Rialto Theater, the following awards will be announced: Glocal Images Best Film Award (€6,000), Glocal Images Special Jury Award (€3,000 ), Glocal Images

Images Award for Best Director (€1,000). In the Cypriot Films Competition section, the following prizes will be awarded: Best Cypriot Film Award (€4,000), Best Cypriot Director (Mastering DCP – Deliverables and Subtitling Services worth €3,500 – sponsored by Authorwave) and Best Actor/Actress Prize (€500 – offered by the Municipality of Limassol). All films screened in the Glocal Images international competition section and the Cypriot Films competition section will also compete for the Audience Award, as voted on by festival goers.

Cinema for children and teenagers

This year’s edition for children and young people aspires once again to improve the film education of Cypriot children and adolescents, stimulating their critical thinking and broadening the horizons of the young viewer. A carefully selected program of screenings as well as a varied range of cinema-related workshops for children and teenagers will capture and enrich the imagination and knowledge of young viewers. The artistic director of this year’s edition is filmmaker Stavros Pamballis.

DOT.ON.THE.MAP for film professionals

In development and expansion, the Festival will also organize this year the 3rd Dot.on.the.Map Industry Days, a co-production, training and networking platform, organized in collaboration with the AGORA International Film Festival Thessaloniki, Greece.
