After two years of the Los Cabos Film Festival taking place virtually due to the pandemic, it has finally been announced that from November 9-13, the 11th Annual Los Cabos International Film Festival will return to its usual format. In pre-pandemic times, many Hollywood stars had traveled to the Mexican Pacific for the festival.
Robert De Niro, Reese Witherspoon, Diego Luna, Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson are just some of the stars who have attended the event in previous editions. Many of these actors, including Robert De Niro, are Cabo regulars whether or not they attend the festivities. Who can we expect on the red carpet this year?
Popular movies that have screened at the event over the years
In previous editions of the festival, more than 90% of the films screened in Los Cabos were seen by the public for the first time. It looks like the 2022 edition will be no different. Currently, event organizers are calling for applications from around the world for independent films to screen in Los Cabos.
Over the years, however, at least one or two Oscar-promising films get a special screening in Los Cabos. In 2012, for example, the Oscar-nominated NO, starring Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal, got a special screening on the shores of Cabo. The film earned Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín his first Oscar nomination. Larraín would go on to direct two of the most popular political biopics of recent years in “Spencer” and “Jackie,” respectively. This year, it’s actually another popular biopic that potentially gets a special screening in Los Cabos.
The stars who came to Cabo Shores to be honored at the Film Festival
As previously mentioned, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon both walked the red carpet in Cabo. Kidman actually received the 2018 Los Cabos International Film Festival‘s Outstanding Work in Film Tribute Award. While Witherspoon just appeared as a guest of honor at the festival. Actors Edward Norton, Adam Driver and Dennis Quiad are some of the other names that have appeared on the Cabo red carpet as special guests. With 2022 being the first year back to normal for the festival, the event’s artistic director, Maru Garzon, said there would certainly be VIP guests at this year’s edition, saying:
“It is important to continue to emphasize that the festival belongs to Los Cabos and that it is organized for the people of Los Cabos. Any efforts that can be made to bring in a special guest would be fruitless without the enthusiasm and presence of the general public. This is something we can never stop cultivating, insisting on and promoting! »
Oscar Hopeful ‘Elvis’ May Get a Special Screening in Los Cabos
Although the nominees for the multiple awards in various categories the festival hands out won’t be revealed until October, some films are likely to get a special screening in Cabo. Oscar hopeful, “Elvis,” which depicts the life of rock icon Elvis Presley and has already grossed over $250 million at the box office, will likely get a special screening in Cabo.
Los Cabos film festival organizers held a special screening for residents of Chetumal, a town near Cancun, ahead of the film’s release in theaters and streaming platforms in July. With that in mind, and with the Los Cabos Film Festival taking place in the months leading up to main awards season, director Baz Luhrmann’s film is sure to appreciate the extra spotlight. Especially since the film will be out for quite a while by the time main awards season rolls around.
