The highlights of the Cannes Film Festival 2022
Of all the festival’s worthy winners, few have received the accolades offered to Tom Cruise for his involvement in Top Gun: Maverick. The film itself received five minutes of standing applause after its first screening and Cruise himself received a surprise Palme d’Or.
Ahead of the film’s premiere, Cruise was the subject of a tribute reel shown in the theater and French fighter jets flew overhead with a billow of blue, white and red smoke.
“An amazing night and an amazing time,” Cruise told those gathered, “Just to see everyone’s faces. It’s been 36 years since Top Gun and we had to hold that for two years because of the pandemic.
Ruben Ostlund, who won the Palme d’or for Triangle of Sadness!, also headlined Cannes, becoming the ninth director to win the Palme twice.
Guiding Brothers, Jean Pierre and Luc Dardennealso received a special prize at the 75th Cannes Film Festival.
Song Kang-ho won Best Actor for his appearance in Broker. Kang-ho first gained international attention for his Oscar-winning work in Parasite.
