A talented alumnus of Coleg Menai presented his first professional film at the Cardiff International Film Festival.

Osian Roberts, one of the alumni of Menai Park, made his debut with his film “Tryweryn”, which was shortlisted for the festival’s “Welsh Film” award.

Osian, from Llannerch-y-Medd, on the Isle of Anglesey, completed his Art Foundation course at the Coleg Menai site in 2018.

He then went on to study for an Honors BA in Animation at Manchester Metropolitan University, before heading to Cardiff University to complete his Masters in Animation.

“Tryweryn” looks at the history of Capel Celyn, the small village in North Wales which was flooded in 1965 to create a reservoir to supply water to the city of Liverpool.

Osian said:

“I am really proud and excited that my film has been selected for the festival. The film is really important to me and I hope it will highlight the events of Capel Celyn all those years ago.

“Most people have heard the slogan ‘Cofiwch Dryweryn’ (‘Remember Tryweryn’) but aren’t quite sure what happened. So in making the film, I was hoping to get Capel Celyn and her story. “

The Cardiff International Film Festival was established in 2016 and is supported by both the Welsh Assembly and the Cardiff Council.

The festival attracts filmmakers and submissions from all over the world.

Patrons of the festival include Hollywood actors Michael Sheen and Matthew Rhys, writer and producer Marc Zicree, and Bollywood actors Emraan Hashmi and Jaqueline Fernandez.

Due to COVID-19, the film festival was held online over the weekend of Friday October 29 through Sunday October 31.
