Photo exhibition, cultural festival at the Ellora Caves to mark the celebrations
WORLD HERITAGE DAY 2022: People around the world celebrate World Heritage Day today. The day aims to raise awareness about preserving the history, diversity and vulnerability of important sites and monuments. Organizations are responsible for making people understand the richness of culture and traditions that are worth preserving. Now, as part of the World Heritage Day celebrations, a photo exhibition and cultural festival will be organized by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Aurangabad Circle, at Ellora Caves.

Built between 600 and 1000 CE, the Ellora Caves are found in the Sahyadri Hills of Aurangabad. It includes Hindu, Buddhist and Jain temples and over 100 caves, of which only 34 are open to the public carved into the basalt cliffs of the Charanandari hills. According to historians, the Ellora Caves served as lodgings for traveling Buddhist and Jain monks, as well as being a site for the trade route.

Mentioning that World Heritage Day has been observed around the world since 1983 with great zeal and enthusiasm under the jurisdiction of ASI, the superintendent of the agency’s Aurangabad circle, Milan Kumar Chauley, assured that this year will be no different. He told The Times Of India that World Heritage Day celebrations will be observed at Ellora Caves, coinciding this year with the ‘Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the country’s 75th anniversary celebration.
Chauley revealed that the cultural music festival, titled “TRIKAAL,” will be organized by ASI in collaboration with artistic director Birwa Qureshi. The event will begin at 7 p.m.
Sharing the list of performers for the event, the ASI officer said, “Music maestros like Ustad Fazal Qureshi on tabla, singer Anand Bhate, Rakesh Chaurasia on flute, Dilshad Khan on sarangi, Sridhar Parthasarthy on mridangam, Sangeet Haldipur on keyboard, Gino Banks on drums and Sheldon D’Silva on bass” will present a breathtaking musical performance.
In addition to educating young people to pass on the heritage and the importance of safeguarding culture on this day, people also recognize the efforts of architects, engineers, geographers, civil engineers, artists and archaeologists, who contribute to the construction and to heritage conservation.
