Beginning the search for his successor, who will launch its programming and curatorial vision at Festival 2023, the FEI will bid farewell to Linehan after a period of eight years, during which he was acclaimed to reaffirm the Festival’s position as the world’s first performing arts festival.
Keith Skeoch, Chairman of the Edinburgh International Festival Board of Directors, said: “As Fergus Linehan completes his exceptional eight-year term as Festival Director in September 2022, we now begin our global search for his successor. .
The successful candidate will join a historic moment as the wider arts sector rebuilds after COVID-19. Linehan became Festival Director of the EIF in 2014, presenting his first Festival program a year later. Previously he had produced shows and directed the Dublin Theater Festival, commissioning plays such as Seamus Heaney, Brian Friel and Roddy Doyle. He was also General Manager and Artistic Director of the Sydney Festival and Music Director at the Sydney Opera House.
The new festival director is expected to take the international festival to its next level, bringing top performers from music, dance, opera and theater to Edinburgh’s renowned performance venues. , as well as a digital program that gives global audiences access to the festival from their own homes.
