Another awards season is approaching and this year’s Oscars marks the 94th time that golden statues will be presented to what are considered the best films of the year by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. .

Their voting process is a little weird, but it always leaves a movie at the top – except for the rare occasion when someone mixes up the envelopes.

We’re still awaiting the official nominations, but in the meantime, here are some of the films that are set to win the Best Picture Oscar this year.

Best Picture

Best Picture is the prize to which every feature film aspires. It’s one of the few award categories that every Academy member can vote for, so it’s one of the most contested.

The producers of the winning film will usually take the stage to accept the award, but it’s one of the few Oscars that recognizes the efforts of every member who worked on the film.

nomadland

nomadland is the most recent film to win Best Picture and also picked up wins for Frances McDormand for Best Actress and Chloe Zhao for Best Director – making it the second woman to do so.

Parasite

It seems like so long ago Parasite made history with its Best Picture win, at a time when social distancing was non-existent. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this only happened in 2020, even though it felt like 20 years ago.

green book

With Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, green book explores the true story of a friendship between a world-class African-American pianist and his Italian-American driver. The film won Best Picture, as well as many controversies, at the 91st Academy Awards.

Best Picture Oscar Predictions

So, will he win the best film award at the 2022 ceremony?

We’re still waiting for the official nominations, but the Producers Guild of America recently revealed their Top Movie nominations and these are usually a good predictor of the Best Picture Oscar lineup.

The best films currently in the running are:

Best Animated Feature

Animated films get their own category at the Oscars, but it’s not uncommon for an animated film to also be included in the Best Picture category. For a film to be nominated in the Best Animated Feature category, it must be longer than 40 minutes and at least 75% of its running time must consist of animation.

Soul

Disney Pixar is usually a safe bet when it comes to best animated feature. Pixar’s 2020 Movie Soul, about a man seeking to reunite his soul with his body, was no different and won Oscar gold.

Nobody really expected there to be another toy story movie after the trilogy ended in 2010, but toy story 4 did not disappoint. His resolve on the Woody the Cowboy story was heartfelt enough to win him the Oscar two years ago.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

It’s rare for superhero movies to make it to the Oscars, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse broke the mold in every way. The film’s unique animation style and compelling story of the Spider-Man multiverse struck a chord with audiences and Academy members alike. Now let’s wait and see if the sequel can strike gold next year.

Predictions for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature

There’s stiff competition in this year’s crop of potential nominees for Best Animated Picture. Disney doesn’t have one, not two, but Three potential winners on his hands. With ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ topping music charts around the world, it seems Encanto will be the movie to beat.

Predictions for the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature

Some films that caught the eye for the Best Documentary category are the animated documentary hybrid To flee (which is also up for Best Animated Feature) and Questlove’s feature documentary soul summer (which you can watch on Disney+).

Best International Feature Film

The Oscar for Best International Feature Film is awarded to the best film presented primarily in a language other than English. The film’s director(s) will accept the award onstage during the ceremony, but the Oscar is generally considered to be awarded to the country as a whole.

Another round (Denmark)

another round was technically a co-production between Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands. Directed by Mads Mikkelsen, the story follows four men who decide to keep a certain level of alcohol in their system every day.

Parasite (South Korea)

Parasite achieved an incredibly rare feat by being both the winner of Best International Feature and Best Picture at the 2020 Academy Awards. The film certainly deserves it for its dark and compelling insight into the class distinction between families in South Korea.

Rome (Mexico)

Alfonso Cuaron did it again at the 2019 Oscars with his semi-autobiographical story Rome. The film tells the story of a housekeeper working for a middle-class family in Mexico City.

Best International Feature Film Oscars Predictions

The film garnering the most buzz for International Feature right now is Japan’s entry. Drive my car. To flee is also tipped to be nominated again here for Denmark, as well as in the documentary and animation categories.
